Plasma machines create an electronic channel through a gas that is passing through a constricted opening inside the torch. An electric arc is generated from the external power supply and that is when the gas is introduced. This forms a “plasma jet” that can reach temperatures of up to 40,000 F. Plasma machines can use a variety of gases, including oxygen, nitrogen and combinations of argon/hydrogen/nitrogen.
What are the plasma machine components?
There are conventional plasmas and precision plasmas:
Conventional- A conventional plasma system will use shop air as the plasma gas. The shape of the plasma arc is defined by the orifice of the nozzle. All of the handheld systems utilize conventional plasma.
Precision- A precision plasma system has a high current density and is designed to produce the sharpest quality cuts. Multiple gases are used as the plasma gas such as oxygen, nitrogen, and a hydrogen/nitrogen/argon combination.
