A waterjet machine uses a high pressure stream of water to cut through a variety of materials. This includes anything from foam to steel! It is essentially the same as natural water erosion, except it is accelerated and focused onto a specific material by orders of magnitude. It is used for shaping, cutting, carving and reaming.

How does it work?  It first generates pressure and then converts the pressure into velocity.  The stream can be as small as a human hair! If you need to increase cutting power, you can add a garnet which adds to the abrasiveness of the stream.  It is then capable of cutting steel that is over a foot thick.

There are two types of waterjets: abrasive and pure.  An abrasive waterjet has a garnet attached and can cut through hard material like metal or stone.  A pure waterjet cuts softer material like foam, carpet or paper.

This machine consists of three components:

  • Table- The table is an X-Y nozzle mechanism with a garnet hopper attached and a catcher tank below.
  • Pump- This water pump is high pressured and provides the pressurized water that is used for the cutting process.
  • Controller-  This is a computer that controls the machine’s operations.

An advantage of waterjets is that they can cut metals without heat.  Often, heat during cutting can change their properties and affect the material.  Another advantage of using a waterjet is that it is typically a lower cost than other machines due to the fact that you do not need special tools or fixtures.  Waterjets can literally cut ANYTHING, so the possibilities are endless with your machine. What can a waterjet help create? Waterjets can help create electronic parts, robots and much more.

Revelation Machinery can always help you find what you need!  If you have any questions about water jets or need to find a specific brand/type, please feel free to contact us!  If you need to sell your used water jets, do so here.
