Perfect for Milling, Drilling, and So Much More

A used VMC machine is a computer numerical control (CNC) drilling/milling machine that has a a table that holds the workpiece in place while the job is performed. Vertical machining, or milling, uses rotary cutters to remove material from a workpiece. It has a vertical spindle, where the tools point straight down from the tool holder and cut across the top of the material. As technology has advanced, VMCs can perform at higher speeds and use conversational control programming.

These CNC machines also offer ancillary equipment, such as quick-change work holding devices, rotary indexes that enable four—or five-axis machining, angle heads, automatic tool chargers, and spindle speeders.

Used VMC machines are typically enclosed and have a standard of 3 axes, although you can add more. The three axes are the number of individually driven motors and control each tool’s position. The more axes a machining center has, the more control it has over the tool and workpiece.

You can see why vertical machining centers for sale that include a fourth axis would have an advantage in the workshop. The three main axes are the x-axis, y-axis, and z-axis. The x-axis controls movement from the left to the right, the y-axis controls movement from the front to the back, and the z-axis controls movement up and down.

Versatility, Powered By 4 Axes

So, what would a fourth axis control in a used VMC machine? The fourth axis could be used to rotate the cutter around the x-axis, allowing the machine to drill holes in the front and back of the material. Many possibilities with a fourth or even fifth axis make the machines more versatile.

Vertical machining centers are slightly less expensive than horizontal machining centers. The biggest disadvantage of a VMC is that metal chips pile up around the tool, which can interfere with the cutting process.

Vertical machining centers are generally more desirable than HMCs because gravity works with you in the cutting process.

Here’s a quick list of the advantages of getting a used VMC machine:

  • Cost savings: This is probably the biggest benefit. Used machines can cost significantly less than new ones, sometimes up to 50% off the original price. Less expensive
  • Environmentally friendly: By giving a previously used machine a new life, you are reducing the demand for new machines to be manufactured.
  • Availability: Used equipment is often readily available, whereas new equipment may have lead times of weeks or even months.
  • Save Your Floor Plan: Unlike a horizontal machine, a vertical one will take up less floor space
