What Are Horizontal Machining Centers?

CNC machining centers are milling machines with an automatic tool-changing device, which gives them a huge advantage over regular milling machines. The automatic tool changer improves production capacity and makes the machine more versatile. CNC machining centers are known for their accuracy, repeatability, and precision.

The Difference: CNC horizontal mills have a spindle in a horizontal orientation. The tools protrude out of the side of the tool holder and cut the material without leaving metal chips in the way (assisted by gravity!).

VMCs end up having the chips sit in holes at the bottom of the machine that must be removed by the cutter’s helix or a coolant.

HMCs are typically enclosed and have a fourth axis, although three is standard. Even if they do not come with a fourth axis, they can still have a tombstone on them if you decide to upgrade. They can also have a high pressure through-spindle coolant addition and a pallet changer.

Built To Endure & Perform

Horizontal CNC milling machines are usually bigger than VMCs and take up more space in the shop. They are made to be bulky and withstand high production, which means they will be much more durable in the long run.

Another advantage to getting an HMC is that they deflect less and have less vibration than VMCs. Other pros of used horizontal machining centers include:

  • Quieter/Deflect less
  • Much better surface finishes
  • Spindle utilization is higher
  • Chip evacuation is aided by gravity
  • More productive
  • Pay for themselves
  • More rigid
  • Fewer operators are needed, which saves you money!  (they can do the work of 3 VMC’s)
  • Better for mass production
