Plate rolling is a fabrication process where metal is passed through a pair of rolls to thin out the material.  It can either be hot rolling (metal is rolled at temperatures above the recrystallization temperature, which is anything done with heat) or cold rolling (metal is rolled at temperatures below recrystallization temperature, which is at room temperature or near room temperature).  Some benefits to hot rolling is that it will require much less processing than cold rolled steel and this saves your company money. Cold rolling also saves you money because it means that the machine does not expend any energy to heat the material. The whole process is done at room temperature and saves energy.

There are various types of rolling process including controlled rolling, roll forming, profile rolling, roll bending and ring rolling.  A basic roll forming machine has four major parts to it. The first is the entry section where the workpiece is placed. The second is the station rollers, where the material is bent by moving through them.  Next, the cut off press, where the material is cut to the specified length. The last part of the machine is the exit station, where the final piece exits the process and is moved.

Types of Metal Rolling Machines

Roll Former:  These machines are fed long strips of metal that are passed through consecutive sets of rolls that will bend at specific increments until the desired shape is obtained.  They usually operate at speeds between 30-600 feet per minute at a continuous cycle. This makes them an ideal choice for high volume manufacturing facilities.

Bender Roll (Angle Bending Roll):  These machines form metal into cones, curved, or cylinder shapes.  They are also called roller machines or rounders. There are CNC roll benders, manual roll benders and hydraulic roll benders.  The bender rolls work by rotating the workpiece while bending to form the desired shape.

Plate Roll:  These machines involve multiple forces and multiple directions of inertia during the operation.  Four-roll plate rollers are the fastest and produce the most accurate bends. This machine has the plate securely locked in place between the top and bottom rolls.  A three-roller machine has one pressing top roll and two pressing side rolls. The top roll will move in a vertical plane while the side rolls move on the horizontal plane.
