Lathe machinesย assist in removing metals from the workpiece to make a desired part for production. These machines are used to perform various operations such as facing, boring, cutting, knurling, reaming, counter boring, chamfering, parting off, grooving, forming, taper turning, threading, undercutting, eccentric turning, drilling and turning. They are used for metal spinning, metal working, wood turning, and glass working, to name a few.

Lathe machines consist of a headstock, spindle, chuck, tool post, tailstock, hand wheel, bed, lead screw, chip pan, carriage, apron, saddle, cross slide, guideways, feed rod, and a leg.ย  The headstock holds the gear train, chuck, gear speed control levers, feed controllers, and the main spindle. The lathe will spin the material in a spindle while the cutting tool works to cut the workpiece.ย  Some benefits to using a lathe are accuracy and the ability to perform repeatable production jobs.

The Engine Lathe has a gearbox for different spindle speeds and has a carriage that supports the cutting tools.ย  Back when they were first made, the carriage used to trap dirt and dust. Fast-forward to today, and we have a self-oiling machine that has a carriage made to protect itself from getting debris trapped while cutting.ย  These lathes also have a durable headstock to drive the machine at different speeds. The Engine Lathe is very precise, easy to operate and has high safety standards. However, these lathes are not good for repetitive production as they do not have any additional integral features for that type of job.ย  They are better used for individual part production or even parts modification.

Engine Lathes are primarily used to cut metal.ย  They take the metal and turn it while using special cutting tools to form the desired shape. ย  This type of lathe is also one of the oldest types still used today. Back in the 19thย century they began being used in blacksmith shops!ย  When they first became used, they were used with hand-held tools or only had a manual feed.ย  Later on they were created with an automatic feed to the cutting tool. The early model of the engine lathe had a spindle that had a multi-step pulley attached to it.ย  You could change the spindle speeds by moving the flat belt to different steps on the multi-step pulley (also known as a cone pulley).
