Laser cutting is a fabrication process that uses a focused laser beam to cut or engrave materials into specific shapes, patterns or designs. Laser stands for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation. These machines are used to cut metal and are able to produce excellent cut quality due to its small heat affected zone. They can cut through wood, plastic, gemstone, metal, glass and more.

Fiber lasers are a newer technology and becoming more popular among manufacturers. Fiber lasers are best suited for engraving or etching jobs. Think…serial numbers or barcodes. They are less powerful than CO2 lasers and are much smaller. Fiber lasers are capable of cutting up to five times faster than a CO2 laser and with that, it uses HALF the operating costs!

Some benefits of using a fiber laser is that these machines are much more likely to be stable during the machining process than other lasers.  This is due to the fact that the laser beam is generated inside of the fiber which means that any type of sensitive optic is no relied on to have it run smoothly.  The beams are focused, straight and the dot of the fiber can be adjusted to a small size. Another benefit is that they do not need any warm up time compared to CO2 lasers.  Fiber lasers are able to cut up to five times faster than CO2 lasers not to mention the money you save on operating costs. This machine performs the fastest when using nitrogen as the assisting gas.  The higher the power density in the laser, the faster the material is melted and the feed rate is increased.

When looking for a laser machine, you should keep in mind the following.

  • Power: The more power, the more energy it consumes.  Fiber lasers are more efficient and use less power than CO2 lasers.  Less power means it costs less to use!
  • Size: The bigger the bed, the more material you can work with at one time.
  • Material: The material will be the biggest guide to finding the right laser machine for your job.

Why is a Fiber Laser machine preferred over a CO2 laser machine?

  • Faster-5x as fast as CO2 lasers!
  • Cheaper to operate-Typically costs 50% less to operate than other lasers
  • Less maintenance-No beam path maintenance needed.
  • Quick start up!
  • Fully sealed fiber optic beam path at the power source.   (Beam is not subjected to contaminates)
