Roll forming is a fabrication process where metal is passed through a pair of rolls to flatten and/or thin out the material.   It can either be hot rolling (metal is rolled at temperatures above the recrystallization temperature, which is anything done with heat) or cold rolling (metal is rolled at temperatures below recrystallization temperature, which is at room temperature or near room temperature).   The rolling machines that cold roll, do not expend any energy to heat the material. The whole process is done at room temperature and this saves energy. There are various types of rolling process including controlled rolling, roll forming, profile rolling, roll bending and ring rolling.  A basic roll forming machine has four major parts to it. The first is the entry section where the workpiece is placed. The second is the station rollers, where the material is bent by moving through them. Next, the cut off press, where the material is cut to the specified length. The last part of the machine is the exit station, where the final piece exits the process and is moved.

Roll forming machines are fed long strips of metal that are passed through consecutive sets of rolls that will bend at specific increments until the desired shape is obtained.  They usually operate at speeds between 30-600 feet per minute at a continuous cycle. This makes them an ideal choice for high volume manufacturing facilities. These machines perform bends at room temperature (cold rolling) with several stations in the machine to guide the material and make the specific bends at each point.    Each point will bend the material a certain amount and then proceed to the next until it is finished. This type of bending process allows for cross-sectional configuration. The roll forming machines create accurate and clean bends that require little finishing touches.

Most roll forming machines will have the ability to use computer programs to assist in the process.  CAD systems will be a big benefit to machine operators and ensure that the highest level of productivity is achieved.  CAD and CAM systems will minimize the waste of materials as well. There are even some roll forming machines that have TIF welding capabilities as well as some that have laser capabilities.
