These machines are composed of a headstock, spindle, chuck, tool post, tailstock, hand wheel, bed, lead screw, chip pan, carriage, apron, saddle, cross slide, guideways, feed rod, and a leg. The headstock holds the gear train, chuck, gear speed control levers, feed controllers, and the main spindle. The lathe will spin the material in a spindle while the cutting tool works to cut the workpiece. Some benefits to using a lathe are accuracy and the ability to perform repeatable production jobs.
Here are some of the different types of lathes you will see in our inventory.
Multi Axis Lathes– These lathes provide more freedom and flexibility for the spindle to move. Each axis has a motor attached that can move the spindle. For example, 3-axis would allow you to move right/left, forward/backward and up/down.
Vertical Turret Lathes– This lathe is used for repetitive production of duplicate parts and ideal for mass production operations. The turret can hold various tool boxes also can position the blades against the metal at the right pressure and position to be precise. Turret lathes can have multiple tooling attached for boring, drilling, facing, or thread cutting.
Engine Lathes– This lathe has a gearbox for different spindle speeds and has a carriage that supports the cutting tools. The engine lathe is also one of the oldest types of lathes. These lathes have a durable headstock to drive the machine at different speeds. They are very precise, easy to operate and have high safety standards.
Swiss Lathes– This lathe has a holding mechanism that is recessed behind a guide bushing. The guide busing provides additional support to the stock material while it is being turned. The Swiss lathe has the ability to turn small sized parts and parts that have a large length-to-diameter ratio.
What types of products can lathes assist in making? Lathes can help create anything from bowls and musical instruments, to gun barrels. The possibilities are endless! Many different industries use lathes, such as the automotive industry and the aerospace industry.
