CNC (computer numerical controlled) Lathe machines assist in removing metals from the workpiece to make a desired part for production. They are fully controlled by computer programs and make manufacturing jobs much easier to process as less supervision is required.  These machines are used to perform various operations such as facing, boring, cutting, knurling, reaming, counter boring, chamfering, parting off, grooving, forming, taper turning, threading, undercutting, eccentric turning, drilling and turning. They are used for metal spinning, metal working, wood turning, and glass working, to name a few.  CNC Lathe machines are a huge part of the manufacturing industry and as technology advances, become even more essential in shops around the country.

These machines are composed of a headstock, spindle, chuck, tool post, tailstock, hand wheel, bed, lead screw, chip pan, carriage, apron, saddle, cross slide, guideways, feed rod, and a leg.  The headstock holds the gear train, chuck, gear speed control levers, feed controllers, and the main spindle. The lathe will spin the material in a spindle while the cutting tool works to cut the workpiece.  Some benefits to using a lathe are accuracy and the ability to perform repeatable production jobs.

What can CNC Lathes help create?  They can assist in the creation of musical instruments, baseball bats, sign boards, crankshafts, camshafts, gun barrels, furniture and much more. CNC Lathes are used in the electronics, automotive, military, firearms, sporting and aerospace industries to name a few.

CNC Lathes are going to save your shop money in the long run.  They don’t require as many operators supervising the job due to the technological advances of the software for these machines.  A manual machine requires one skilled operator on each machine at all times in addition to a supervisor for the area. Not only will you save on labor costs, but you will save by increasing your productivity as well.  CNC Lathes will be able to produce at a higher speed and precision. You also have more specialization for the jobs with the different designs and programs you can upload. These machines have more capability in producing various sizes, shapes and textures.

Below is a quick pros list of CNC Lathes:

  • Great accuracy
  • A uniform product! No inconsistencies with product production.
  • Repeatability
  • Versatile
  • Autonomous machining! (Cuts your labor costs due to less supervision needed)
  • High production
  • Low maintenance
  • Design retention
  • SAFER! (CNC is safer than manual)
