Laser cutting is a fabrication process that uses a focused laser beam to cut or engrave materials into specific shapes, patterns or designs. Laser stands for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation. These machines are used to cut metal and are able to produce excellent cut quality due to its small heat affected zone. They can cut through wood, plastic, gemstone, metal, glass and more. There are two different types of laser: CO2 lasers and Fiber lasers.

CO2- CO2 lasers are used to cut thicker metals and are much more powerful than Fiber lasers. They are used heavily in food packaging facilities and even pharmaceutical manufacturing. This is an older technology and uses much more energy than Fiber lasers. One advantage of a CO2 laser is the quality if the edge in the cut. A CO2 laser will produce finer edge quality no matter the thickness.

Fiber- These lasers are newer technology and gaining popularity among manufacturers. Fiber lasers are best suited for engraving or etching jobs. Think…serial numbers or barcodes. They are less powerful than CO2 lasers and are much smaller. Fiber lasers are capable of cutting up to five times faster than a CO2 laser and with that, it uses HALF the operating costs!

When looking for a laser machine, you should keep in mind the following.

Power: The more power, the more energy it consumes, thus making it costly. You also need to keep in mind the type of material you are cutting and if it needs a stronger laser. Keep in mind that a stronger laser will cut faster and more efficiently.

Size: You will need to be aware of the bed size. The bigger the bed, the more material you can work with at one time.

Material: The material will be the biggest guide to finding the right laser machine for your job. Be aware that some materials can catch fire or produce toxic fumes in your facility.

Revelation Machinery can always help you find what you need! If you have any questions about lasers or need to find a specific brand/type, please feel free to contact us! If you need to sell your used lasers, do so here.
