Laser Cutting: The Basics

Laser cutting is a fabrication process that uses a focused laser beam to cut or engrave materials into specific shapes, patterns, or designs. Laser stands for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation.

These machines are used to cut metal and can produce excellent cut quality due to their small heat-affected zone. They can cut through wood, plastic, gemstones, metal, and glass.

Fiber-cutting laser machines are a newer technology that is becoming more popular among manufacturing brands. They are best suited for engraving or etching jobs, such as serial numbers or barcodes. Fiber lasers are less potent than CO2 lasers and much smaller. However, they can cut up to five times faster than a CO2 laser, at half the operating costs!

Used Fiber Lasers: Before You Buy

When looking for a laser machine, you should keep in mind the following:

  • Power: The more power, the more energy it consumes.  Fiber lasers are more efficient and use less power than CO2 lasers.  Less power means it costs less to use!
  • Size: The bigger the bed, the more material you can work with at one time.
  • Material: The material will be the biggest guide to finding the right laser machine for your job.

Why is a fiber-cutting laser machine preferred over a CO2 laser machine?

  • Theyโ€™re 5x as fast as CO2 lasers!
  • They cost  50% less to operate than other lasers
  • Less beam path maintenance is needed
  • Quick start-up!
  • Fully sealed fiber optic beam path at the power source. (Beam is not subjected to contaminates)
