Saw machines are used throughout the fabrication industry.  There are several types that we may have in our inventory, horizontal bandsaws, vertical bandsaws, cold saws, and cut-off saws.  Bandsaws are mainly used to cut metal in machine shops and other various fabrication facilities. The machines have a system that provides cooling fluid to prevent the blade from overheating as well as wash away the debris.  Most bandsaws are equipped with a brush wheel that keeps chips/debris from piling up or getting stuck in the teeth of the blade.

Horizontal Bandsaw machines are used to primarily cut large pieces of metal.  The saws hold the material stationary while the blades move down to make the cut.  Horizontal saws are not meant for cutting complex shapes or curves like Vertical saws because they apply gravity only. They can cut various materials including plastic, titanium, graphite wood and of course, metal.

These machines are operated hydraulically by controls on the side of the machine.  In the base, there is a reservoir that supplies hydraulic fluid to a cylinder that raises and lowers the support arm as well as controlling the band tension and feed pressure.  There are two common configurations of horizontal bandsaws. There is the scissor type and dual column type. The dual column type will raise and lower the head on precision-ground linear guides.  The scissor type has a pivot bearing on one side of the head.

Horizontal Bandsaws are made up of the following parts:

  • Table-This is where the material is placed to start the cutting process.  Horizontal bandsaws hold the workpiece while you lift the blade to move it down through the material.
  •  Blade-The most important part of the machine is the piece that cuts the material.  The type of blade you use with your machine will depend on the type of material you need to cut.
  •  Dust Collector-This piece of the machine assists in keeping the work area free from dust and debris.
  • Guide-This part of the machine helps with the accuracy and cleanness of the cut.
  • Vise– The vise holds the workpiece in place.

What are some benefits of owning a Horizontal Bandsaw?  Some benefits include the ease of cutting through tough materials, and the ability to work with large pieces of material.  These saws are also a great fit for shops with jobs that require high repeatability. The automatic off capability is a great safety benefit as well.
